Lifting Eye Bolts & Eye Nuts
You can find lifting capacity options (WLL - Working Load Limit) online. They range from 95kg to 125 tonnes for a single M150 bolt. For twelve M48 bolts, the limit is 250 tonnes.
These are all standard products. However, we can also make special or custom options for greater capacities.
The Different Types of Eye Bolts and Nuts for Lifting or Lashing
Lifting eye bolts and eye nuts are also commonly known in the industry as lifting eyes, lifting points, hoist rings or load rings. You can find fixed-position (non-rotating) or swivel eye bolts. They come in many metric and imperial thread sizes. Manufacturers make them from high-grade, high-tensile steel or stainless steel.
Each type of lifting point or eye bolt can come in different shapes and sizes. This includes DIN standard eye bolts and nuts, BS4278 standard collar eye bolts, and ISO3266 eye bolts, which are similar to BS4278. It also includes EN1677-1 lifting points, long shank eye bolts, dynamo type eye bolts, and eye bolts with built-in oval links or rings.
For angular loading or multi-point lifts, the most common type of eye bolt is a swivel lifting point. Examples include the RUD VLBG-Plus, the RFID-equipped Yoke 211, and the uniquely serialised Codipro DSR. Anyone can verify the serial number and authenticity of any Codipro product online using the Coditracer.
People often prefer swivel eye bolts and lifting points for this type of lift because they are rated for their full capacity even at 90° angles. They can also rotate automatically to match the loading angle.
In contrast, you must de-rate a standard collared eye bolt by up to 75%. It must also be within 5° of the plane of the eye.

Eye Bolts & Lifting Points - Types and Uses
At LiftingSafety, we supply a wide range of lifting points and fittings to suit different applications.
Stainless steel versions are ideal for corrosive environments. Traditional BS 4278 or ISO 3266 collared designs are still widely used, but many customers now prefer EN 1677-1 swivel models, which rotate automatically in the direction of the lift. Swivelling designs are stronger than regular collared fittings and perform better under angled loads.
We also stock DIN 580 eye bolts, DIN 582 eye nuts, and BS3974 bow nuts, which feature larger lifting eyes but lower safe working loads compared to BS4278/ISO3266. For greater strength and higher SWLs, and in most cases a smaller physical and thread size, a swivel eye bolt is the best choice.
What is an Eye Bolt?
This type of fastener has a threaded shank and looped head, widely used for lifting, rigging, and securing loads in construction, marine, and industrial settings. Choosing the right design is essential for safety and efficiency.
Common Eye Bolt Sizes
- Small: M5-M8 (rare).
- Medium: M10-M36 (popular).
- Large/heavy-duty: M42-M150 (up to 150mm diameter).
- Other thread forms also available: UNC, UNF, BSP, BSW, 8UN, metric fine.
Eye Bolt Applications
- Construction - lifting steelwork, anchoring equipment.
- Marine - stainless steel fittings resist saltwater corrosion.
- Industrial - heavy-duty and swivel types used with machinery and cranes.
Specialist Lifting Eye Options
- Bolt-on clamps - create secure lifting points on I-beams or H-beams, either permanent or temporary.
- ISO container fittings/lugs - designed to connect directly to shipping containers.
Choosing the Right Eye Bolt
When selecting the right option, consider:
- Load capacity - match size to the weight.
- Application - use swivels for angled lifts, collared for straight lifts or where the required capacity reductions are acceptable, and stainless steel for corrosion resistance.
- Safety - for critical lifts, choose certified fittings such as Codipro or RUD.
Eye Bolts in Summary
These lifting components are available in many types, sizes, and materials. Whether you need stainless steel for marine use, a swivel model for multi-directional lifting, or a heavy-duty version for industrial loads, the right choice ensures safety and reliability. From small M5 fasteners to large M150 lifting points, there’s a solution for every application.
