Grade 8 4-Leg Lifting Chain Slings
This range covers the Hack8 pre-assembled and certified grade 8 (grade 80) four-leg lifting chain slings, available in chain diameters from 7 mm through to 32 mm, providing a wide selection of working load limits to suit varied lifting requirements.
Alongside the Hack8 range of chain components, the Hack10 grade 100 component range is also available. Grade 100 (also referred to as grade 10) offers a higher capacity-to-diameter and capacity-to-weight ratio when compared with grade 80 chain and components, enabling higher lifting capacities with reduced chain size and overall sling weight.
Although the Hack8 component range was a new addition to the market in 2024, the William Hackett brand itself is long-established within the lifting industry. With many years of experience supplying chains, chain slings, and chain sling components, the Hackett name is widely associated with quality, reliability, and compliance.
Each four-leg chain sling is supplied pre-assembled with a master link and four equal-length chain legs, configured for stable load attachment and control. While four legs are present, the Working Load Limit (WLL) of a four-leg chain sling is rated the same as a three-leg assembly, as industry standards assume that only three legs are load-bearing at any one time.
The Effective Working Length (EWL) - measured from the bearing point of the master link to the bearing point of the hooks - can be manufactured to customer-specified lengths, subject to chain link increments. Four-leg chain slings can also be supplied with temporary shortening grab hooks, allowing individual leg adjustment to accommodate uneven, asymmetrical, or complex loads, and improving overall lifting flexibility.
Key Features of Hack8 4-Leg Lifting Chains
- Component standards: Components are designed and manufactured in accordance with EN1677-1 and are suitable for use in chain slings certified to EN818-4.
- Chain standards: designed and manufactured in accordance with EN818-2 and ASTM A391/A391M, and suitable for use in chain slings certified to EN818-4.
- RFID Enabled: chain sling assembly tags contain an RFID chip to relay product and certification details digitally.
- Product sizes: available for chain sizes from 7mm to 32mm and with working load limits from 1.5 tonnes to 67.0 tonnes (depending on the number of sling legs and lifting angles).
- Temperature: operational temperature range of - 40°C to + 200°C without reduction in working load limit.
- Material: alloy steel.
- Testing: components and chain proof load tested to 2.5 times the working load limit.
- Safety factor: 4 : 1.
Grade 80 Chain Diameters and Capacities
- 7mm = 2.2 to 3.1 tonnes (2,200kg-3,100kg).
- 8mm = 3 to 4.2 tonnes (3,000-4,200kg).
- 10mm = 4.75 to 6.7 tonnes (4,750-6,700kg).
- 13mm = 8 to 11.2 tonnes (8,000-11,200kg).
- 16mm = 11.8 to 17 tonnes (11,800-17,000kg).
- 20mm = 19 to 26.5 tonnes (19,000-26,500kg).
- 22mm = 22.4 to 31.5 tonnes (22,400-31,500kg).
- 26mm = 31.5 to 45.0 tonnes (31,500-45,000kg).
- 32mm = 47.5 to 67.0 tonnes (47,500-67,000kg).

Chain Sling Selection Guidance
This information provides detailed WLLs for various chain sizes and configurations, emphasising the importance of selecting the correct chain size and configuration for safe lifting operations. All lifting applications should be assessed by a competent person in order to establish the size and type of sling required.
Angle Tensions
In the case of multi-leg slings, the angle between the legs is critical. The actual tension on each leg increases when the angle between the legs increases, as shown in the diagram opposite. For this reason, all general-purpose chain slings are given a rating based on use at 90º incl. angle. The included angle between the legs should never exceed 120º.
Chain Sling Headroom
The distance between the crane hook and the load is known as the “Headroom”. If a specific headroom is required, the “Reach” of the chain sling must increase as the angle between the legs increases, as shown opposite.
Lifting Reach - Effective Working Length
Also known as bearing to bearing (b-b) or chain length.
The reach of a chain sling is the distance between the bearing points of the upper and lower terminal fittings. This distance, commonly known as the “Bearing to Bearing”, should be quoted when ordering slings.
Shortening grab hooks may be fitted to a sling, making the reach adjustable, hence increasing the versatility of the sling.
