Configuration and Usage

Some of the pictures shown may be artist's impression and may only indicative of the Sala advanced system capability; 'For display purposes only' and may not be exactly to scale. The davit systems are made individually and the design may be subject to change according to your required specification.

Man-riding winch and inertia reel with integrated rescue winch.

In our opinion this is the only configuration that should be considered for manriding applications (suspended work at height).

The hoist safety provides means of suspended access and egress; i.e. getting winched  in and out of the confined space by using while also providing a fall arrest protection and a rescue plan.

When a person is suspended while working at height there is the always a risk of falling due to equipment / winch failure and therefore the davit system should incorporate means of arresting a potential fall (a fall arrest plan).

There is also a legal requirement to provide a way to carryout a rescue after the fall (A rescue plan). Thus, the hoist lifts and lowers the worker and the inertia reel arrests a fall in the event of a hoist failure. The inertia reel has an integrated rescue winch which will then be used to rescue the casualty, raising or lowering them to safety.

It should be noted that the integrated winch built into this fall arrest inertia reel must not be used as a man riding winch (for access or egress) it is a means of rescue in the event of an emergency only.

Extra Winch and SRL Brackets required for this configuration:

1 x 8510207

1 x 8516824

1 x 340**** Depending on SRL Capacity (15m = 3401065, 25m = 3401123, 39m = 3401126).

Fall arrest inertia reel with integrated rescue (retrieval) winch.

This scenario will enable a person to gain access / egress to the chamber (confined space etc) by climbing down a fixed vertical ladder.

In the event of the person falling from the ladder, the fall will be immediately arrested by the inertia reel block. You must assume that the worker cannot self rescue (step back on to the ladder and climb out), for example having suffered a broken limb or heart attack. The rescuer will then retrieve the casualty with the inertia reels built-in rescue winch. Thus providing a rescue plan.

Please note that the In-Built winching facility provided by this type of inertia reel can only be used for emergency rescue of a casualty and must not be used for suspended work at height.

Man riding davit arm system with inertia reel with integrated rescue winch

Man-riding winch and Inertia reel (no integrated rescue winch).

We suggest that you use the option above for suspended working at height! - Man riding winch and Inertia reel c/w integrated rescue winch.

This configuration looks similar, however because the inertia reel does not feature an integrated rescue winch, there is not a means of rescue in the event of a hoist failure. The casualty would be left suspended which is extremely dangerous, being subjected to the effects of suspension trauma and the potential of death.

To conclude; although you would have a fall arrest plan you would not have a rescue plan as required by law.

Extra Winch and SRL Brackets required for this configuration:

None.

Man riding Winch only.

This configuration is only suitable for rescue situations.

The man-riding winch on its own cannot be used to lift a person for access and egress because there is no provision for fall arrest or rescue in the event of a winch failure.

In this scenario a failure to the lifting hoist would expose the suspended worker to a potential fall; the Working at Height Directive 2005 says that we should not begin work at height without having a rescue plan when there is the possibility of a fall occurring and therefore this davit configuration should not be used for man riding applications without the combined use of a fall arrest retriever block.

Extra Winch and SRL Brackets required for this configuration:

None.

Fall arrest inertia reel with integrated SELF rescue descender.

This scenario will enable a person to gain access / egress to the confined space by climbing down a fixed vertical ladder.

If the worker falls from the ladder, the fall will be immediately arrested by the Sala RSQ inertia reel block and then dependant on the chosen setting will either:

  • Automatically descend the casualty to the floor
  • The Top-side winch operator manually activates the built-in descender.

Using the Sala RSQ block means that the user will have both a fall arrest and rescue plan though it is only ever suitable if the rescue is downwards!

Extra Winch and SRL Brackets required for this configuration:

1 x 340**** Depending on SRL Capacity (15m = 3401065, 25m = 3401123, 39m = 3401126).
