Wire Rope Pulling Winches & Lifting Hoists

Quick Ref: CN-1220

Available here are a wide choice of hoists which can either lift or pull a load by means of a wire rope. There are two main differences with wire rope devices, some are designed to lift and pull (hoists) and some are designed just to pull (winches). The main factor that decides if a wire rope machine can be used to lift, pull or both is the factor of safety that it required and the unit is built to; to lift a load there is a FOS (factor of safety) requirement of 5:1, whereas to pull a load the requirement on only 3:1 FOS. Options are available for manual, electric, pneumatic or hydraulic cable pulling and lifting devices. All of which have their own unique features and specifications which can make one more suitable than another. If you feel you need assistance at any point in deciding the right piece of equipment for you, please get in contact and we will do our best to ensure your problem is solved.

Hand Operated Wire Rope Winches and Hoists

Manually operated Hand winches and hand operated wire rope hoists are cost effective ways to pull and lift a load. We at LiftingSafety offer a great range from many top lever lifting equipment manufacturers including Yale, Pfaff, Verlinde, Tractel and many more to be added shortly.

The main features to consider when ordering on products contained in this category are as follows. Are you intending to use the wire rope winch/hoist for lifting materials or for pulling applications? If for pulling do you need free spool, a free spooling drum for quick extension of the cable? What height of lift do you need? (Length of wire rope needed when at maximum extension). How do you intend to mount the hand operated winch, floor mounted, wall mounted or as a portable wore rope hoist? When fitting, consider the handle position on the winch to ensure that it will be operable in the area to be installed and not interfere. What environment is it to be used in, do you need corrosion resistance or made from stainless steel.

A wire rope hand operated hoist is designed to primarily lift a load though it is also safe for a hoist to pull a load whereas a hand operated wire rope winch can only pull a load and never be used to lift a load. The main reason being that the factor of safety (FOS) for both types is different, for lifting the FOS is 5:1 whereas with pulling winches only 3:1 FOS is required.

Cable Pullers / Hoists, Wire Rope Manual Operation

In this category we offer manually operated cable pullers which cable pulling machines that are also used to tension and hold a load. We also offer manual cable hoists, hand operated machines certified to lift a load. Lifting machined can also be used for pilling application though pulling machines cannot be used to lift with as they do not have an adequate safety factor. All lifting equipment has a design factor of safety which represents a minimum multiple of the rated capacity that the machine must be able to hold before ultimate failure. The factor of safety for pulling is only 3:1 when 5:1 is needed for lifting applications! In this category the Tirfor by Tractel is by far the most popular item of lifting equipment. Tractel offer a great range of Tirfors and are generally accepted in the lifting gear industry as being the best. We also offer other manufacturers with cheaper alternatives from Yale, Pfaff and Ingersoll Rand as we believe that it is important we offer other manufacturers products so that we have an option to suit all our customers budgets. We offer safe working loads of 300kg to 6400kg lifting tonne capacity. Pulling capacities are potentially much greater though and are dependent on many factors, for example; friction resistance, incline, rolling load etc. For example a 3.2 tonne Tirfor may be able to pull a 100 tonne train on rails when flat and level, put the same train in a 2% incline and a much greater capacity is needed.

Electric Winches and Hoists, AC (Mains Powered)

AC Electrically operated pulling winches and wire rope lifting hoists are for pulling and lifting materials. We at LiftingSafety offer a great range from many top lever lifting equipment manufacturers including Yale, Pfaff, Verlinde and Tractel with more manufacturers products to be added to the catalogue shortly. With electric wore ropw winches and hoists features to consider are: does the end user intending to use the wire rope winch / hoist for lifting materials or for pulling materials? If for pulling is free spooling drum required? Making it quick and easy to manually pull out the cable off the drum? What height of lift is required for the application? (or length of pull). How does the customer intend to mount the winch, floor or  wall mounted? Does the end user require corrosion resistance or made from stainless steel? An electric wire rope hoist is designed to lift a load though after risk assessment may be suited to pulling applications though an electric wire rope winch can only pull the load (Not lifting). The main reason is that the factor of safety (FOS) for lifting hoists is 5:1 and FOS for pulling winches only 3:1 FOS. Lifting with a pulling certified winch is dangerous; only use a lifting certified electric wire rope hoist for lifting materials. Please note that with pulling winches the winch may have a different maximum inline rated load / capacity dependant on the layer of wire rope sitting on the drum.

(As the wire rope stacks on the drum) The closer the wire rope is to the core of the drum the less effort is needed to turn the drum and therefore the greater the capacity the winch can pull. As the drum fills the pulling capacity decreases. Electric wire rope hoists  for Lifting materials are always rated at the worst case scenario to avoid accidental overloading of the hoist.

Wire Rope Scaffold Hoists (Builders Hoists) & Accessories

LiftingSafety Scaffold hoists all quality products and mostly manufactured by Imer in Italy, A premium scaffold hoist manufacturer. Scaffold hoists are a piece of lifting equipment that that are very versatile, they are used in many industries and offered at competitive prices. They provide lifting features that would be far more costly when designed into other hoist presently on offer in the market place. Scaffolding wire rope hoists are simply wire rope hoists that are designed to be used on construction sites for lifting building materials tools and equipment from the ground level to the working area above. Lifting equipment like scaffold hoists are also referred to as builders hoists; they as basically a wire rope lifting hoist that are suitable for outdoor use and usually supplied with a bracket and claps for attachment to a scaffolding or to a scaffold tower; the bracket will cantilever out from the scaffolding on a pivot arm that rotates to allow the load once raised to swing above the working platform. There are many different brackets and fixing methods including a counterweight gantry system, this is totally free standing scaffold tower and requires no fixings or fasteners. Builder’s wire rope lifting hoists are normally single phase 230v in the Europe and 110v single phase in the UK though we also offer 415v options that are usually for greater capacities. The lifting capacity for scaffold hoists varies from 100 – 500kg.

Scaffold / builders hoists tend to be fast lifting speeds in the region of 18 metre per minute and long heights of lift up to 100 metre. When looking for a suitable scaffold hoist the key features are HOL height of lift as you need to be able to reach your working platform from the floor. Lifting speed is important as long lifts take time and time costs money. Capacity, ensure you have adequate lifting capacity, get a greater capacity hoist than the weight needed to be lifted most of the time, it is generally accepted that the 80% rule is good practice; in other words order a hoist with 20% greater capacity than you are lifting most of the time.

We at sell Hydraulic wire rope winches and hoists from premium lifting equipment manufacturers including Ramsey, Superwinch, Pullmaster and Tractel with many more manufacturers and their products to be added to the catalogue in the near future. For Hydraulic steel wire rope winches (hoists) features to consider are:

  • Application – does the customer intend to use for lifting materials or for pulling applications? (Factor of safety (FOS) for lifting hoists is 5:1 and FOS for pulling winches only 3:1 FOS. Lifting with a pulling certified winch is dangerous)
  • Capacity for lifting – What lifting or pulling capacity do you need? Hydraulic wire rope Lifting hoists are rated at the same lifting capacity (SWL)with rope on or off the drum.
  • Capacity for pulling - Pulling winches will have a different capacity dependant on the layer of wire rope is on the drum. The closer the wire rope is to the core of the drum the greater the capacity, as the drum fills with rope the pulling capacity decreases.
  • Free spooling drum - If for pulling is free spooling drum required which is a feature that allows the user to manually pull out the cable off the drum?
  • Length of rope needed - What height of lift or length of pull is needed?
  • Fitting the winch or Hoist - How does the customer intend to fit the hydraulic winch / hydraulic hoist to the floor or wall?
  • Material finish - Does the end user requires corrosion resistance or made from stainless steel?

LiftingSafety’s compressed are steel wire rope pull winches and lifting hoists from premium lifting equipment manufacturers, Yale Ramsey, Pullmaster, Pullmaster and Tractel and more to be added in the near future (we are constantly being approached by other manufacturers to advertise their products online). For Pneumatic steel wire rope winches and Pneumatic lifting hoists the following should be considered when choosing a product to suit your application. Does the customer intend to use the machine for lifting materials or for pulling goods? The Factor of safety for lifting requirements is 5:1 though FOS for pulling is only 3:1 FOS and therefore it is dangerous to us a pulling winches cannot be used for lifting applications. What lifting or pulling capacity is needed? For pulling application the rated load is known as the capacity and for lifting application the Pneumatic wire rope hoists have a safe working load (SWL). Compressed air wire rope Lifting hoists are rated at a maximum lifting capacity (SWL) regardless of whether all the rope spooled on or fully discharged off the drum whereas Pneumatic pulling winches will have a different capacity dependant on the layer of wire rope is on the drum.

Vehicle Mounted Winches for Recovery and Lifting

Our vehicle mounted electric winches and hoists are usually permanently fitted to the vehicle though some in this category are either temporally installed or used for other possibly industrial application where only a 12v / 24v power supply is available. By far the majority of the category contacts are recovery winches for pulling applications only and not to be used for lifting applications. It is potentially dangerous to use a pulling winch for lifting application because the features on a pulling DC winch make it unsuitable. Also pulling and recovery DC winches only have a 3:1 safety factor when lifting Hoists actually need a 5:1 FOS. DC recovery winches operate on 12 volt or 24v and therefore the duty cycle is very poor (the amount of time the motor can run before it overheats) A recovery winch is not suited to long pulling applications and this is why they are fitted with a free spooling facility (disengaging drive gears). If a greater duty cycle is required then please consider a pneumatic or hydraulic recovery winch. We only sell good quality battery recovery winches and do not aim to compete with cheap Far East imports
